Betts Diplas PLLC was founded to provide clients with exceptional litigation services by combining the experience, rigor, and responsiveness of an elite Big Law litigation practice with the affordability, transparency, and flexibility of a lean, partner-led firm.
Our co-founders worked together for years in the complex commercial litigation and products liability groups of a premier Big Law firm based in New York City, representing prominent global companies in some of the most closely watched disputes in the country. These matters, valued in the hundreds of millions or billions of dollars, spanned federal and state courts, arbitration, and bankruptcy, and crossed sectors from life sciences and healthcare to consumer products and financial services. Through our work, we have helped our clients secure major victories, shaped precedent on novel legal issues, and earned the trust and praise of discerning in-house legal teams and senior executives.
We also worked directly in the legal departments of industry-leading financial and pharmaceutical companies, gaining firsthand insight into how our clients value litigation strategies that properly account for their risk profiles, budgets, and business objectives.
From those experiences, we identified an unmet need for sophisticated litigation counsel without the headcount or fees of large law firms. We established our firm to address that demand through an efficient practice that delivers superior value without compromising quality.
Michael advises clients in commercial and employment litigation. He has a science background and extensive experience handling cases in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and healthcare sectors. Before co-founding Betts Diplas PLLC, he practiced at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, worked in-house at a global pharmaceutical company, and maintained a solo litigation practice.
Alexi represents clients in complex contract and commercial disputes, with particular experience in financial services and investment management litigation. Before co-founding Betts Diplas PLLC, he practiced at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, served in-house at Morgan Stanley, and clerked for a federal district judge in Pennsylvania.
We represent businesses of all sizes, as well as individuals, in high-stakes commercial disputes. We bring expertise and practical insight to matters at every stage of litigation in federal, state, and bankruptcy courts, as well as arbitration, mediation, and settlement negotiations.
We also partner with other law firms as local counsel in New York and New Jersey, as independent counsel when conflicts arise, and as separate counsel for related parties.
Having litigated highly technical issues across a wide range of sectors, we are able to learn new industries quickly, understand our clients’ businesses, and advocate fluently on their behalf. In particular, we have extensive experience in the following industries:

We are committed to maintaining transparency about pricing and delivering value in every engagement. As a boutique law firm, we can customize fee agreements with a level of flexibility that larger firms often cannot match. We offer a range of fee models tailored to the needs of each client and matter, including hourly, contingent, fixed-fee, and hybrid arrangements. This approach allows us to select the fee structure that best aligns with our clients’ objectives while ensuring resources are used efficiently to achieve successful outcomes.
For clients who prefer traditional hourly billing, we bill at competitive hourly rates, informed by our lean structure and strategic focus.
In select matters, we work on contingency, which ties our compensation to the results we achieve for our clients.
For clients who value budget certainty, we offer fixed-fee arrangements designed around the scope of work and the anticipated phases of litigation.
We can design hybrid arrangements that combine elements of hourly, fixed, or contingent fees to meet our clients’ unique needs.
